had to go back and listen again to the first hymn after reading the text, was sure I heard musical instruments 😹💝

I thought I did too, but no, as far as I can tell it was a cappella as planned. Our pianist provided a starting chord (starting notes for all four parts). If there was a "helper" instrument, it was not in the livestream mix, and not in my monitor mix either.

This is the only choir I've been in that didn't moan about singing a cappella. They just do it, and there have been no disasters. I was in a combined choir once, at an event back in the mid-90s, with 100 or so people in the choir, that experienced an a cappella crash when a lead soprano completely lost the key and dragged everybody down. It was kind of like a controlled demolition, as many of us struggled to maintain the key. One of those in a lifetime is enough!
